Welcome to "Foracheim 1248"! This page is all about high and late middle ages everyday-life in Upper Franconia, namely in the city of Forchheim. At this point, I'd like to introduce you to this page - though there is no complete English version of my page. However, you might happen to like my photos... Generally spoken, this site has three main aspects: Summary of regional historic background. Presentation of the Foracheim 1248 Living History project, which shows high and late medieval life on museum events. Inventory of medieval sites in the region of Upper Franconia. Zu verkaufen lists some objects which I want to sell. Forchheim gives detailed information about the focal point of my research and presentation: The city of Forchheim in Upper Franconia. Überblick lists Forchheim's history chronologically. Forchheim im Mittelalter goes elaborately into Forchheim's history in the Middle Ages. The city's importance - especially in the late early middle ages - for the Franconian Empire and the early German Empire is shown as well as its meaning as fortress for the bishops of Bamberg in the late high and the late middle ages. Region in Vor- und Frühgeschichte gives headwords on the region's development before the middle ages. This is not in the focus of this page. Forchheim in der Neuzeit shows the further development after the middle ages up to now, especially its role in the big wars of the early modern age and industrialization.. Historische Sehenswürdigkeiten bundles some information on major sacral and profane buildings in the city which still remain from the middle ages: So-called Kaiserpfalz is an episcopal residence from the late 14th century and does not represent the palatinate of the 8th and 9th centuries. Parish church St. Martin is the most important sacral buiding in the city. It contains - besides others - 16 panels of Wolfgang Katzheimer from around 1485. Weitere kirchliche Bauten lists other sacral buildings in the city.  Rathaus und Profanbauten shows examples of carcass buildings in the city, among them guildhall and magistrate building. Stadtbefestigung - the fortification dates partly back to the 13th century, but is mainly of the 16th century. Name und Wappen explains the origins of city name and coat of arms. Sagen und Legenden tells some anecdotes all around Forchheim, including the Pontius Pilatus tale. Stadtarchäologie finally gives an overview of so-far archaelogical work in the city. Franken im Mittelalter broadens the focus by also reckoning history of the area nowadays called Franconia. Franken im Frühmittelalter touches the region's development since the 6th century (early middle ages). Again, I cannot go into details too far here. Franken im Hochmittelalter shows how local power has shifted again and again since the 10th century (high middle ages). This period is engraved by the three bishops (Würzburg, Bamberg, Eichstätt), the Staufers and local noblemen as those of Andechs-Meranien. Franken im Spätmittelalter is all about the period of Nuremberg's ascendency, the deployment of power of the Zollern (margraves of Ansbach-Kulmbach) and the big wars of that period. Städte in Franken initially gives an overview of the local towns' lords, especially in the late middle ages. The spreading of those towns is shown on several maps.. Klöster in Franken shows dimly the major cloistral impact in Franconia, which may be summarized as rather low. Tuchproduktion in Nürnberg is the summary of H. Sakuma's work on cloth fabrication in late medieval Nuremberg. Erlangen im Mittelalter gives a brief overview of my hometown Erlangen's history in the middle ages. Projekte shows the different projects of Foracheim 1248: Vom Schaf zum Gewand is all about thread fabrication and other aspects of clothing creation based on pure wool. Flachsverarbeitung is about the other textile distributor: basic procedures for cloth generation based on flax / linen. Färben shows some examples of plant-dyed cloth which may have been reached in the middle ages. Weben am Gewichtswebstuhl gives a short introduction into weaving at the vertical loom (warp-weighted loom), which has still been common up to the 13th century. Weben am Trittwebstuhl shows the follower of that technique, namely weaving at the horizontal loom . Lederarbeiten gives an impression on the leather works I present at museal events. Brettchenweben und andere Techniken shows techniques of some friends of mine like tablet weaving (including a historically correct tablet weaving loom). Darstellung tries to give an overview about my equipment for reconstruction of high and late medieval everyday life in Forchheim. Here, I resign from listing concrete sources as this shall be only for getting a brief impression. Kleidung summarizes basic clothing of a middle to high-end townsman. Kleidungszubehör shows accessories which may or must have been worn by a townsman, like fibulae, belts and scabbards. Regionale Keramik shows replica of local pottery as cans, pots and cups from the 13th to 15th centuries. Geschirr und Besteck is all about knives, spoons and dishes of the 13th to 15th centuries. Lagerzubehör lists a collection of things all around my presentation, like furniture, transport things and my hand-sewn tent. Werkzeug is mainly about tools for making shoes and refines the Lederarbeiten section. Zeitvertreib shows replica of local toys and games. Militaria lists my weapons - where it shall be clear that this is not in the focus of my presentation as shoemaker. Bronzegerät shows replica of high medieval bronzes. Schuhe is a section about high and late medieval turnshoes Typologie give a brief overview about the classification of these shoes. Material+Methoden gives some notes on material and technology used. Lederverarbeitung is about some special techniques used for decorated shoes. Schuhbauanleitung gives a step-by-step introduction into the making of medieval turnshoes with modern tools. Just try it out! Primitive Schuhe shows some simple ancestors of turnshoes. Schlupfschuhe shows slipper-like shoes without special fastening. Halbschuhe, seitlich is about side-laced low shoes.
